Capturing the Essence of the Cultivar
Most terpenes and other essential oils are considered “Volatile Organic Compounds”, many of which evaporate readily given the right opportunity. Even the gentle process of hang drying and curing fresh cannabis flowers to enjoy for smoking creates a considerable loss in terpenes and other potentially beneficial compounds. We carefully harvest fresh, whole-plant Cannabis and deep freeze it immediately – halting the degradation and loss of these essential oils. The harvesting process for a proper live resin is meticulous and labor intensive – A tremendous amount of care and respect is shown for these plants as they are prepared for the extraction phase.
Every cultivar has its own unique chemical profile to offer which is responsible for the widely varying smells, tastes, and effects associated with Cannabis that we all love. The extraction process occurs at very low temperatures and gentle pressures, further minimizing degradation of these sensitive compounds. The result of a finely controlled extraction yields a solution rich in cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, esters, phenols etc. – all in their naturally occurring raw state. Once these unique chemical profiles are carefully extracted in their entirety, the resulting solution is then ready for separation.
At this stage the solution is very rich in one compound in particular – THCa. This raw, acidic cannabinoid prefers to crystallize when at high purities. As the solution is slowly heated under the right conditions it begins to naturally separate as THCa molecules begin to interact, bonding together to form a crystalline structure. As separation continues the concentration of THCa drops below a certain point and crystal growth will cease, at which point they will be carefully removed from the solution. A tightly controlled crystallization and separation yields not only a crystalline fraction that exhibits stunning clarity, brilliance and purity – but also a liquid fraction that is rich in the remaining essential oils and cannabinoids, often referred to as High Terpene Extract (H.T.E). This full spectrum live resin oil is either drizzled over the very crystals it helped birth, or used in our Full Spectrum Live Resin Cartridges.
It is important to note that HTE is much more than just terpenes. It contains a large spectrum of cannabinoids, flavonoids, esters, phenols and other organic compounds – all proportionate to the original plant material. Each batch’s unique chemical composition and concentration can vary widely based on a number of factors – arguably the most important being the original starting material’s genetic potential. These compounds in their naturally varying ratios are responsible for the incredibly unique smells, tastes, and effects from strain to strain. There’s also evidence to suggest that these naturally occurring compounds act synergistically with THC and CBD – their presence can modulate or even potentiate the uptake of cannabinoids in the endocannabinoid system. This phenomenon is known as the “Entourage Effect” and can offer insight into the myriad of different effects associated with Cannabis varieties. These highly potential therapeutic compounds are often overlooked and lost to the heavy refinement process used to create most vape cartridges on the market today. The process effectively strips everything from the cannabis oil, yielding a highly purified THC rich distillate. Flavor and other ingredients must then be added to this oil to make it more palatable, some of which are not safe to ingest.
The Cartridge
Every batch is carefully formulated with the perfect balance of flavor and effect in mind. An overabundance of terpenes can lessen the effect while creating viscosity issues, while conversely a highly potent THC distillate will offer little to no flavor (and therefore a short lived, dull effect).
